If you run an ecommerce business, quizzes are a great way to connect your customers with the right products or services, increase engagement, and to build your email list. Personalized recommendation allows your customers to feel like their needs are being addressed, and automated workflows can ease strain on your customer support team by replacing the need for a sales representative.

Online quizzes grew in popularity with millennials starting in the late Aughts. I certainly remember passing many hours on Buzzfeed figuring out which Hogwarts house I belonged in or what type of pasta I am based on my horoscope. They were a fun interactive way to pass the time, and the personalized results made me feel unique. Most importantly, quizzes were highly shareable content, and I loved posting my results on my Facebook timeline.

Brands were quick to utilize the interest in quizzes to create a personalized shopping experience for their customers. Beauty brands were among the first to adopt the quiz model to drive sales. For example, in 2016 the hair care brand, Function of Beauty, launched their personalized quiz to create a completely customizable shampoo and conditioner. More recently, Prose followed suit with their line of personalized hair care.  Today, we see quizzes across all ecommerce sectors, from vacation rentals to fashion.

Brands use quizzes because they have an extremely high completion rate as opposed to general lead generation forms. The content is also highly interactive and shareable - attracting new customers to your site and driving revenue.

So where do you begin? There are many quiz building apps out there, so choosing the right one for your needs can be overwhelming. Below we will go over three quiz building platforms that NoLie Communications has worked with that will help get you started on creating a personalized shopping journey for your customers.

Typeform

Cost : Starting at $25/month

Integrations: Shopify, Klaviyo, Slack, Mailchimp, Hubspot

Typeform is a great resource for building out quizzes and has a variety of templates that make the job of designing your quiz easy. Typeform not only has templates for product recommendation, but also for digital learning and hiring for HR departments. The platform has a high success rate and boasts 1 million daily downloads.

One of Typeforms success stories is Beardbrand. Their beard quiz amassed 150K lead generations, and built the brand’s second most successful mailing list.

Additionally, the interface of the platform is user friendly and allows you to ask a range of questions, from multiple choice to open-ended responses.

Visual Quiz Builder

Cost: Starting at $9/month

Integrations: Klaviyo, Google Analytics

Visual quiz builder is a highly-rated app found directly in the Shopify store. If you're new to quiz creation, Visual Quiz Builder is a great place to start. Like Typeform, this app allows you to ask a variety of questions and add visual elements to your quiz.

One of the more complicated aspects of building a product recommendation quiz is the workflow logic. I.e. Answer C relates to product X,Y, Z. Visual Quiz Builder makes logic creation easy and allows you to visualize the entire workflow of the quiz. One of our favorite features of this app is that it allows you to create logic jumps, where customers can skip certain questions depending on certain answers and conditions.

Tangent

Cost: Set up price consultation

Integrations: Shopify, Klaviyo, Google Analytics

Tangent is a great quiz building resource especially for brands in beauty and skincare. It involves the customers taking a selfie, and Tangent’s facial mapping technology analyzes hundreds of data points that allow your customers to get hyper-personalized recommendations based on their needs.

NoLie recently partnered Tangent with our clients Amazing Cosmetics to create a selfie quiz that matches customers with their perfect shade and products. The incredible support team also created flows in Klaviyo based on a combination of results like skin tone and concerns, allowing us to bring personalized email marketing to the next level.
